This is something that started a long time ago and it is meant to make the chef look neat and smart with equal designs.
The designs of the uniforms might have changed over the years but the purpose remains the same. The functional features of chef uniforms and the safety purposes also remain the same.Chef coats are designed in a way that they are double breasted and it is made from a cotton material that is very thick. It also has buttons in double row but the button holes are on a single row.
The front buttons are usually knotted in a traditional way and the sleeves of the coat are long. The most common color for these coats is white and this in the traditional days was meant for cleanliness and safety. The chef uniforms are also usually white so that when they are washed they can be bleached to remain clean as usual. It is also meant to symbolize the hygiene and the feeling of cleanliness in the kitchen. It is also meant for protection from heat due to the extra insulation that it has and that is why the cotton material is used, as it is heat resistant. However, there are many modern designs of the chef uniforms that the restaurants opt for.
Other restaurants allow the chefs to put on their desired chef coats as long as they are neat and represent the restaurant well.
